Frequently Asked Questions

What does "VentAir" mean — how does the ventilation work?
The Vigilis VentAir Tree Shelter features perforations along the upper section of the tube that allow greater airflow compared with a standard solid shelter. This reduces humidity inside the shelter, which lowers the risk of fungal disease on susceptible species and produces a slightly more wind-hardened stem. The VentAir design is particularly well suited to broadleaved species in humid, lowland sites.
VentAir vs standard Tree Shelter — which should I choose?
Choose the standard Tree Shelter for maximum warmth and fastest establishment in cold or exposed locations. Choose the VentAir where humidity is a concern, for species prone to fungal disease, or where you prefer a harder, more wind-trained stem. Both provide equivalent browsing protection in the same five heights. Many foresters use solid shelters in upland plantings and VentAir in lowland broadleaf schemes.
Is the VentAir Tree Shelter recyclable?
Yes — the VentAir Tree Shelter is made from the same UV-stabilised polypropylene as the standard Vigilis Tree Shelter and can be returned through the Vigilis Protect, Collect, Recycle scheme at end of life. Collected shelters are recycled rather than sent to landfill, making the VentAir a responsible choice for projects with sustainability reporting requirements.
Does ventilation reduce the microclimate benefit inside the shelter?
There is a modest trade-off: perforations reduce the temperature elevation inside the tube compared with a fully sealed shelter. For cold or exposed sites this means the standard Tree Shelter is the better option. In milder lowland conditions the VentAir still delivers a meaningful microclimate benefit — faster establishment than no shelter — while keeping humidity at a safer level for disease-prone species.
Does this product contain recycled content?
Yes. Vigilis recyclable products are produced with up to 30% recycled plastic, predominantly from our own in-house production scrap. Keeping this stream closed-loop within our factory reduces virgin plastic use while maintaining the strength and UV stability needed for full establishment-period performance. At end-of-life, the product is fully recyclable through standard plastics recycling streams.
