Voleguards

Small-diameter guards protecting young root systems and stem bases from vole and rodent damage.

Vigilis Voleguards protect tree and shrub stems from vole and small rodent damage — a serious threat that often goes undetected until a plant is ring-barked and lost. Compact and easy to apply, they fit around the base of the stem inside or alongside your existing tree shelter or guard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What damage do voles cause to young trees?
Field voles and bank voles gnaw the bark at the base of young tree stems — damage that typically happens at or just below ground level and is often invisible until the plant is ring-barked and dies. A tree can survive partial damage, but complete ring-barking severs the vascular system and kills the plant. Voles are most active in late winter and early spring, making newly planted sites particularly vulnerable during this period.
Do tree shelters already protect against voles?
Standard tree shelters and mesh guards do not protect against voles, which are small enough to enter through any gap at the base of the shelter. A voleguard fitted around the base of the stem — inside or alongside the main shelter — provides the additional targeted protection needed. Maintaining a clear, vegetation-free circle of 1 m radius around each tree also significantly reduces vole pressure by removing the ground cover they depend on.
How do I fit a Vigilis Voleguard?
The Vigilis Voleguard is designed to be placed around the base of the stem at planting or any time afterwards, sitting at or just below ground level to cover the zone where voles attack. It can be used inside a tube shelter or alongside a mesh guard. The flexible spiral construction makes it easy to apply without disturbing the root system.
Is a Vigilis Bio Voleguard available?
Yes — the Vigilis Bio Voleguard is a fully soil-biodegradable, plastic-free version that degrades naturally in the soil over time, with no removal required. It is suitable for grant-funded planting schemes where plastic-free protection is required. See our Bio Voleguard product page for full details.

Voleguards: Protecting Tree Stems from Vole and Rodent Damage

Voles are a significant and often underestimated cause of tree establishment failure. Field voles and bank voles gnaw bark at the base of young stems, frequently causing ring-barking that kills the plant — often undetected until it is too late. Standard tree shelters and mesh guards do not prevent this, as voles can enter at ground level. Vigilis Voleguards provide targeted protection at the base of the stem where vole damage occurs, complementing your primary tree protection rather than replacing it.

When to Use a Voleguard

Voleguards are most important on sites with known vole populations, dense ground vegetation, or a history of unexplained planting failures. They are also recommended on any site where trees are being planted in grass — voles use the grass for cover and can reach stems easily. Forest Research notes that maintaining a 1 m vegetation-free zone around each tree significantly reduces vole attack pressure alongside physical guards.

Biodegradable and Recyclable Options

The standard Vigilis Voleguard is made from recyclable polypropylene and should be removed and recycled at the end of the establishment period. The Vigilis Bio Voleguard is fully soil biodegradable and plastic-free — it degrades in situ with no collection needed, which is particularly convenient given that voleguards are positioned at soil level and can be difficult to retrieve cleanly.
