Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Vigilis Bio Ventair Tree Shelter?
The Vigilis Bio VentAir Tree Shelter combines the plastic-free, soil-biodegradable credentials of the Bio Tree Shelter with the ventilated design of the VentAir range. It provides robust browsing protection and a growth-promoting microclimate while managing internal humidity more effectively for species prone to fungal disease — and with no plastic to collect at the end of the shelter's life.
How does a biodegradable ventilated shelter break down?
The plant-based material degrades through natural microbial action in the soil, typically beginning after approximately six years of service. The ventilation perforations do not significantly accelerate degradation — the overall lifespan is similar to the solid Bio Tree Shelter. Once degradation begins, the shelter fragments gradually and is absorbed into the soil, leaving no lasting plastic residue.
Is the Bio VentAir accepted for Countryside Stewardship and grant-funded planting?
Biodegradable tree shelters are generally accepted and often preferred under Countryside Stewardship woodland creation agreements and other grant-funded schemes with conditions around plastic use. We recommend confirming accepted products with your scheme adviser before ordering. The Woodland Trust and Forest Research are both conducting long-term field trials of biodegradable shelters to inform future policy guidance.
Can I use Bio VentAir shelters alongside standard recyclable shelters on the same site?
Yes — many projects mix product types, choosing biodegradable shelters for areas where collection would be difficult and recyclable shelters where access is straightforward. Both ranges use the same stakes and Vigilis T-Band Anchor Ties and are available in the same five height options, making mixed-use sites simple to manage.
