Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Vigilis Tree Shelter recyclable?
The Vigilis Tree Shelter is made from UV-stabilised polypropylene — a widely recycled plastic — and is designed to be collected at the end of its useful life. Removed shelters can be returned through our Protect, Collect, Recycle scheme, keeping plastic out of the environment. This makes it the practical choice for large-scale forestry projects where post-planting collection is part of the management plan.
What sizes are available and how do I choose?
The Vigilis Tree Shelter is available in five heights: 0.6 m, 0.75 m, 1.2 m, 1.5 m, and 1.8 m. Choose 0.6 m–0.75 m for rabbit and hare pressure only; 1.2 m for roe deer and muntjac; 1.5 m–1.8 m for fallow, sika, or red deer. Where multiple species are present, always size to the largest threat. Contact your local deer management adviser or visit Forest Research for species-specific guidance.
How do I install a Vigilis Tree Shelter?
Slide the shelter over the whip after planting and position a stake alongside it — not through the tube, to protect the root system. Secure the shelter to the stake using a Vigilis T-Band Anchor Tie, threading it through the ventilation slots near the top of the shelter. Check ties and stake firmness each growing season and re-secure as needed.
Can the Vigilis Tree Shelter be used on exposed upland sites?
Yes — the solid polypropylene construction and twin-wall design give the Vigilis Tree Shelter the structural rigidity needed for exposed upland and moorland plantings. On very exposed sites, use two stakes per shelter and inspect after severe weather. The solid-tube design also creates a warm microclimate inside the shelter, accelerating growth in colder, windier locations where establishment would otherwise be slow.
Does this product contain recycled content?
Yes. Vigilis recyclable products are produced with up to 30% recycled plastic, predominantly from our own in-house production scrap. Keeping this stream closed-loop within our factory reduces virgin plastic use while maintaining the strength and UV stability needed for full establishment-period performance. At end-of-life, the product is fully recyclable through standard plastics recycling streams.
