Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Bio Voleguard biodegradable?
The Vigilis Bio Voleguard is manufactured from certified plant-based materials that degrade through natural microbial activity in the soil. It contains no conventional plastic and requires no collection — ideal for protecting stems at ground level where guards are difficult to retrieve cleanly after years in the soil.
How long does the Bio Voleguard last?
The Vigilis Bio Voleguard is designed to maintain its vole-deterring function throughout the critical establishment period before beginning to degrade. Being at soil level means it is exposed to more moisture than above-ground guards, which may influence degradation rate — in very wet soils it may begin to break down slightly earlier. Its protective function remains effective for the establishment phase in normal UK conditions.
Is the Bio Voleguard suitable for use with biodegradable tree shelters?
Yes — for a fully plastic-free planting system, pair the Bio Voleguard with the Vigilis Bio Tree Shelter, Bio VentAir Tree Shelter, or Bio Mesh Guard. This combination means nothing needs to be collected at any point after planting, which is particularly valuable for remote, difficult-to-access sites or grant-funded schemes with plastic-free conditions.
Can the Bio Voleguard be used on grant-funded woodland and hedgerow schemes?
Yes — biodegradable plant protection products are accepted on most grant-funded woodland creation and hedgerow planting agreements in England. Confirm with your scheme adviser that the specific product meets the eligibility criteria. Data sheets are available from Vigilis on request — contact us here.
